simple for breakfast or baby steps for a recovering perfectionist

I have always been a rule follower, so not following a recipe, to me, feels like skirting disaster. But, I’m making progress. Last night as we were winding up another long day, I pulled out the ingredients for these overnight oats.

Too tired to look up the recipe from the fabulous Angela Liddon (, I just started adding things to the dish. Once everything was in place, I popped it in the fridge to “settle” overnight and headed off to bed.

Ten years ago, I could not have done this. Okay, two years ago I probably wouldn’t have done this. But I’m making progress as I take baby steps away from the obsessive perfectionist that used to hide behind my smile.

I am no culinary genius, but I realize this wouldn’t have worked with crème brulee. Hmmm, now there’s a yummy thought for breakfast! But I digress …

There are times when winging it won’t end in something edible. But I’m learning to know this difference rather than reverting to my default setting: “obsess over everything.” And the results are so freeing; you should absolutely try it!

A big difference for me is that God has been gently stripping away my delusion that I am somehow capable of controlling everything. Welcome to the real world, Lauren! It’s just not possible.

The sooner I’m able to accept that and fling myself into the unknown trusting He will catch me, the sooner I relax and enjoy the ride rather than being afraid of what may be headed my way from around the next bend in the path.

So, here’s to trusting, which I get is easier said than done. And here’s to celebrating baby steps, even something as basic as keeping it simple for breakfast!

Blueberry-Banana-Lemon Overnight Oats

  • 1 cup raw oats
  • A tablespoon or two of chia seeds
  • A dash of cinnamon
  • A pinch of salt
  • A banana, sliced
  • About ½ pint of fresh blueberries
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • About ¼ cup pure maple syrup
  • 2 drops Young Living Lemon Essential Oil

Assemble in any order, stir, cover, and let sit overnight in the refrigerator.

Enjoy in the morning with your favorite person in the world!
